MODESTY (16)

THE INHERENT NATURE OF WOMEN

Hakeemul Ummah Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib رحمه الله has said that women by nature are modest. A wealthy individual inclined to the shameless ways of the west once ordered his wife to discard her Purdah, but she refused. One day in a rage, he confronted her with a firearm, ordering her to abandon her Purdah otherwise he would kill her. She replied; “I accept death, but not the abandonment of Purdah.”

On hearing her decision, the husband shot his wife and killed her. For the sake of Purdah, she offered her life. May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله forgive her and elevate her status.

Hakeemul Ummah Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib رحمه الله has further explained that even if the Shariah had not ordered Purdah, then too honour demands that women are saved from the lustful glances of men. Money is an inferior commodity; however it is concealed from others and well protected. A woman deserves greater care and protection than money. The attraction between male and female is natural; it is therefore necessary that extreme care and caution be exercised.

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Maseehullah Khan Sahib رحمه الله advised that the names of our women should not be disclosed to others; at times when men hear of the qualities of our women, they start fantasising and this causes spiritual havoc. The true culture of Islam is the refinement of moral character and modesty. The aim is to attain the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله. The actions of a Muslim will be focused on maintaining the discipline of modesty because ultimate success is salvation in the Aakhirah.
