THE SCOURGE OF TELEVISION
There is no doubt that television has become an integral part of our lives and we are bombarded with immodesty, nudity and obscenity. It is as if our sense of morality is desensitised. How absurd is that the entire family sits in one room happily watching scenes of adultery! And even worse, nobody feels bad about it.
Our Ahlullāh have given these examples;
1. Will we allow the drinking of liquor in our homes?
2. Will we allow anyone to commit adultery in our living room?
3. Will we allow someone to gamble with our family members?
4. Will the use of obscene and vulgar language be tolerated in our households?
Obviously, we will find it repugnant to even consider anyone to involve themselves in such heinous sins in our houses. What has happened to us? We have allowed the filth of shamelessness to contaminate our lives through the television but we do not consider it wrong?
The Holy Qur’ān is very clear in that the believers have been told to lower their gazes and protect their private parts. We have to understand that Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله is All Aware of whatever we involve ourselves in. Modesty is the outstanding characteristic of a believer. Whatever leads one to lewdness and obscenity has to be eliminated from our hearts and minds. We acknowledge with grief in our hearts that the filth we are exposed to from the television, cellular phone, tablets and laptops has ruined the concept of modesty in our lives. The frightening aspect is that we do not regard the viewing of these obscenities as evil. Hazrat Moulana Faqeer Muhammad Sahib رحمه الله (the Khalifa of Hazrat Thaanwi رحمه الله) once said that the umbrellas (satellite dishes) have repelled the mercies of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله. If we are indeed desirous of the assistance of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله, we will need to make firm decisions to involve ourselves in those actions that earn the mercy of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله.
Are we prepared to heed the warnings?
