MODESTY (29)

REDUCTION IN SPEECH

Hakeemul Ummah Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib رحمه الله has said that it is mentioned in a Hadīth; “Modesty and speaking less are part of Īmān.”

In another Hadīth, it is stated; “Verily Allah Ta’ala loves a person who speaks little and is modest.”

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib رحمه الله has advised that the heart of a Mu’min (believer) should be perpetually be engrossed in the fikr (concern) of the Aakhirah. When he has gained this attribute, then he will be one who speaks little. In such a state, it is not possible for the tongue to be unfettered. However, when there is a need, then temporarily eloquence develops as was the case of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم and the Sahaba رضوان الله عليهم اجمعين.

When there is an urge to speak excessively, realise that this is a desire of the Nafs. The Nafs thrives on fulfilling desires in a particular way; therefore the need is to check the detestable habit of talking excessively. It is imperative for spiritual discipline that the Saalik maintains lengthy periods of silence and only speaks when necessary. The Mashaa’ikh have further advised that if the Saalik is careful with regards his speech, his heart will open up to spiritual realities.
