THE CHASTITY OF
HAZRAT MARYAM عليها السلام
Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel Sahib رحمه الله has mentioned that Hazrat Maryam عليها السلام sought refuge in Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله after having conceived; she was extremely worried. It was naturally a terrifying experience that compounded fear; A CHASTE WOMAN, SECLUDED IN HER CHAMBER, NEVER CONVERSING WITH ANY STRANGER, TO CONCEIVE A CHILD WITHOUT BEING MARRIED. HOW WILL SHE FACE HER PEOPLE? HOW WILL SHE EXPLAIN HER CONDITION? ….At this stage she was unaware of what was to happen.
Helpless, alone and overcome by her circumstances, she considered that it would be better to be dead and forgotten than to contend with a plight so agonising. She said, as mentioned in the Holy Qur’ān:
قالت يليتني مت قبل هذا وكنت نسيا منسيا
“She said: ‘Would that I had died before this and had been forgotten and out of sight!'”
(Surah Maryam 19:23)
Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel Sahib رحمه الله has shared a vital lesson that whilst Hazrat Maryam عليها السلام had not engaged in anything remotely displeasing to Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله, she has taught us an amazing perspective: IT IS BETTER TO BE UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH THAN TO COMMIT SUCH A SERIOUS AND GRAVE CRIME AS FORNICATION AND ADULTERY.
Alas! What has happened to the Ummah? These days, we publicise and advertise our sins. We have become so blatant that we encourage others to do the same. This has become the norm of both young and old. Many Muslims post updates of their transgressions on their different social media accounts. Is this not the height of depravation where we disobey Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله and inform others of our disobedience; this is done on a global platform!
Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel Sahib رحمه الله has further elaborated that sins reveal our ignorance and stupidity. And then we make a public display of our rebellion against Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله. Hazrat رحمه الله has then cited a Hadith in Bukhāri Shareef: “Every one of my followers will be forgiven except those who expose (openly) their wrongdoings. An example of this is that of a man who commits a sin at night, which Allah Ta’ala has covered for him, and in the morning, he would say (to the people): ‘I committed such and such sin last night,’ while Allah Ta’ala had kept it a secret. During the night Allah Ta’ala has covered it up but in the morning he tears up the cover provided by Allah Ta’ala Himself.”
Are we not experiencing this reality nowadays? May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله save us from every conceivable avenue of sins and conceal our shortcomings, both in this world and the Aakhirah.
